Secondary Classroom Management Strategies
Purpose:
- The
overall purpose of a management plan for students in a secondary setting
is to promote respectful student behavior in the classroom. My feelings are that you are preparing
these students to be adults in their up coming professional life that they
will soon lead.
- Plainly
in my approach, the students should be taught with the respect and common
courtesy they deserve. If students
choose to act in a less than appropriate behavior, then the teacher will provide
the solutions for an appropriate behavior.
- The
students will be rewarded for their classroom management process through
the opportunities of the music program.
These rewards could possibly consist of concerts, class musical
trips, as well as many other performing/educational experiences in and
outside the classroom.
- The
class behavior will be presented in a handout depending on the situation
in their music folders or just as a classroom handout. This handout will instruct the students of
the positive behaviors and manners that are acceptable in the classroom.
Room Arrangement:
- In a
secondary classroom setting, students will be given the opportunity to sit
anywhere that is not distracting.
The obvious seating shuffling will take place if need be.
- In an
ensemble type situation, students will be arranged in normal band
instrumental sections according to their instrument. Music part placement will be determined
by their technical ability, but also where all students will be given a
chance to play all part levels at one time during the year.
Behavioral
Expectations:
- Students
will be taught with the utmost respect from day one in attempt to prepare
them for their futures.
- Students
shall be quiet using common courtesy while others are talking, thus giving
positive effort to the classroom instructions and activities.
- Students
shall follow teacher’s instructional directions being respectful and nice
to the people in the classroom.
- Students
will be provided in their music folders or just as a classroom handout, a
list of positive actions they should do in class. These actions will include common
courtesy manners which are written above, also other daily exercises
students could do during the course of the class time. For example in an instrumental ensemble situation,
students will be provided instructions on what to do during setup and
warm-ups. These could be simplest
things like putting the instrument together, to playing particular warm-up
excerpts, as well as playing or tuning the instrument with others.
Rewards:
- Students
will be rewarded with being a part of a group. It is the fact students are being a part
of a group that works together as a team to conquer challenges. The students are learning how to be
social, working together in a group.
- In
this musical class or group, these students will be able to possibly
travel to places performing what they learned, music. These performances could be such things as
community activities, concerts, or other performances which will show case
the talents of these students.
Consequences:
- If
students behave in an inappropriate manner, the students will be provided
appropriate solutions to correct the situation.
- If
things still are inappropriate, school actions such as detention will be provided
thus leading to the call of parents/legal guardians by the teacher.
- If
things seem to get progressively worse, then students will be warned and
then lose chances to be a part of the group (ensemble).
- The
final consequent when all other avenues have been exhausted would be bringing
the problem to the school principal.
